In Thailand Srisuwan Janya, the Secretary-General of the Association for the Protection of the Constitution, has accused the officials who allowed the Cambodian company to build a casino on the border with Thailand’s territory of negligence. The charges were brought against Prawit Wongsuwon, the Deputy Prime Minister, Lt Gen Wichai Saejorhor, the Second Army commander. Srisuan Yanai believes that the casino construction has damaged the moral foundations of society and the country as a whole.
Cambodian casino at Ta Phraya National Park became a matter of dispute between the governments of Thailand and Cambodia a few months ago.
Thai authorities believe the casino was built on their territory, while the Cambodian government insists that gambling establishment is 300 metres from the border with Thailand.
Thailand’s National Parks Department confirms that the gambling establishment is located within the borders of Cambodia. At the same time, some experts claim that the casino is located in Thailand.
This conflict lasts on several months already. Its acuteness is enhanced by the fact that Thai law prohibits all forms of gambling.
Thai anti-corruption activist Veera Somkwamkid was the first to condemn the construction of a Cambodian casino in Thailand. The case has caused public uproar after Somkwamkid’s arrest for breaking the law on cybercrime. Vira states that the real reason for his arrest is disclosing violations related to the casino, one of the investors of which is a former Thai politician Newin Chidchob.
